Laser Skin Resurfacing
The outer layer of our skin bears the brunt of all that nature has to offer. But rest assured that fresh, healthy skin is waiting just underneath the surface of your face. You’ll be happy to learn that harsh textures, discolorations, and irregularities you see in the mirror are only a mask covering healthier facial skin. At our southern New Jersey office, laser skin resurfacing can quickly and safely reveal this untainted skin and encourage the growth of new, revitalized skin on any part of your face.

Benefits of Laser Skin Resurfacing
Many busy men and women choose laser skin resurfacing to create a new, smooth skin appearance through a short, relatively painless procedure. This procedure offers many benefits, which include:
- Reducing or removing facial wrinkles, creases, and lines
- Improving sun-damaged skin
- Correcting pigmentation problems and spots
- Softening scars from acne, birthmarks, moles, and tattoos
- Tightening skin that has lost elasticity due to aging
Dr. Sorokin also offers other popular medical spa treatments such as BOTOX® Cosmetic and laser hair removal. You can find out more about your options during your consultation.
Types of Lasers
We offer multiple types of lasers based on your needs and goals. We have the PicoSure™ Focus laser. This non-ablative laser will treat discolorations, light acne scarring, and fine lines. It excels for pigment discoloration changes. We have the GentleMax laser which while usually used for hair removal is both an Alexandrite and YAG laser that for some pigmentary issues can be an excellent option. Finally we offer CO2 resurfacing with the Smartskin CO2 laser. This is a deeper more aggressive laser that removes the outer layers of skin to reveal fresh newer skin which is great for treating scars, tightening wrinkles, and tightening fine lines.
The Laser Skin Resurfacing Procedure with CO2 Laser
During this procedure the Smartskin CO2 laser “ablates,” or destroys, the outer layers of your skin that have been damaged by age, sun, acne, wrinkles, or pigmentation problems or spots. Destruction of the older layers of skin prompts the body to generate a fresh, new layer of skin cells. Note that some lasers may be inappropriate for darker skin complexions. The laser is a “fractionated” laser with a scanner head which allows Dr. Sorokin to control the strength of the procedure, the amount of skin ablated and left behind, and the depth of laser treatment.
When performing laser skin resurfacing, Dr. Sorokin first cleanses your face of oils and applies an antibiotic ointment. The laser is then used to ablate the top few layers of skin in a controlled manner until the appropriate depth of skin is reached. The procedure commonly is performed with a local anesthetic, with or without sedation.
Recovery Following Laser Skin Resurfacing
Dr. Sorokin’s post-operative instructions for CO2 laser call for plenty of rest and limited movement in order to speed up the healing process and recovery time. Additional antibiotic cream and bandages are applied to the affected area immediately following surgery in order to aid with the healing process, minimize swelling, and control the risk of infection. The skin will be red and may ooze for a period of time. Some discomfort should also be expected, and is controlled with oral medication. While complications are rare, patients can minimize potential problems by carefully following the post-operative directions. Recovery time varies based on the extent of the resurfacing and the number of procedures completed.
A More Gentle Laser Skin Resurfacing with Picosure Focus
During the PicoSure™ procedure laser light at the speed of the Picosecond is applied with a specialized Focus attachment for skin rejuvenation. This is a more gentle procedure which treats acne scars, fine lines, discoloration, and age spots. The laser energy is delivered with incredible speed to penetrate into deeper skin layers stimulating collagen and elastin production. The nice thing about this laser is the very rapid recovery. Literally patients are red for one day and are able to return to full activity within 24 hours. The skin will be slightly red for a few hours after the procedure but will look nearly normal the next day. Over the next month the effects of rejuvenation will become apparent as the skin heals. This laser is usually used in a series of 3 treatments spaced one month apart. Often a series of 2 or 3 treatments separated by 4 to 6 weeks is recommended. The PicoSure™ Focus is not as strong as an ablative laser, however, given the recovery the results can be pretty dramatic.
